Yesterday, we had an exciting day celebrating the hard work, dedication, and achievements of our students at James C. Isabell School! 🎉
A special thank you goes to the Teller Traditional Council for being such a big part of recognizing and rewarding our students. Their support helped make the celebration meaningful and memorable for so many Aklaqs. 💙
🎓 Attendance Awards:
Students with fewer than 15 unexcused absences were able to choose an item from the prize table.
Students with fewer than 7 absences for the entire year also received a $50 gift certificate from the Teller Traditional Council. 👏
📚 Academic Awards:
Students who earned a GPA between 3.5 and 3.7 received an item from the prize table and a $50 gift certificate from the Teller Traditional Council.
Students who earned a 3.7 GPA or higher also received an item from the table and a $50 gift certificate in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement. 🌟
We are incredibly proud of all of our students for their hard work throughout the school year. Keep striving, growing, and representing the Aklaq spirit! 💙

Yesterday, we were proud to recognize Eric Boring as the recipient of the Volleyball Mix 6 Region 1 Coach of the Year Award. 👏🏆
Coach Boring represents what true leadership, sportsmanship, and fairness look like. When there was a discrepancy in games played between Teller and Brevig Mission that affected regional advancement, Coach Boring stepped forward to ensure the process was fair and that the best team earned the opportunity to advance. Through his integrity and commitment to doing what was right, the games were ultimately played in Brevig.
His dedication to students, athletics, and fairness goes far beyond wins and losses. Coach Boring continually puts students first, teaches accountability and teamwork, and represents Teller with pride and professionalism. To many of us, he is not only one of the best coaches in the region, but one of the best coaches Teller has ever seen. 💙

Mia Weyanna is in the Aklaq Spotlight for her hard work throughout the entire school year. She had one of the lowest absence rates and consistently came to school smiling and ready to work. Mia demonstrates the Iñupiaq value of humor by always sharing funny and appropriate jokes that brighten the day for others. She also gave outstanding effort during the Staff vs. Students basketball game and is always willing to help classmates when they need support.
Mia should be proud to be an Aklaq because we are all proud of her and the positive impact she has around the school.
Coach Boring shared, “Mia deserves the Aklaq Spotlight. She has been plugging away from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.”

🦌💙 Hunter Safety Education! 💙🦌
On Monday, our students participated in a Hunter Safety Education class—and we are proud to share that all students passed! 👏🎉
Throughout the training, students learned valuable outdoor and firearm safety skills that can help save lives and promote responsible decision-making in the field. These are important lifelong skills, especially in our region and culture.
We also held a special firearm safety lecture with our 9th graders, giving students an opportunity to learn more about safe practices, responsibility, and awareness.
Great job to all of our students for taking the training seriously and representing our Aklaqs with pride! 💙

Today we had our exciting Staff vs. Student Basketball Game at James C. Isabell School! Students who earned fewer than 4 unexcused absences during Quarter 4 were rewarded with the opportunity to take on the staff on the court. Others were able to watch. 💪🏀
The gym was full of smiles, laughter, and school spirit as students had fun competing, cheering, and enjoying a positive day at school. Events like these are a great reminder that attendance matters and school can be fun! 😊
We also had a special guest join the action today — Kevin Busk with Hunter Education came out to play and be part of the fun. Thank you for joining us!

Friday evening, we celebrated the graduation of Ben Ongtowasruk and Taylor Bloomstrand during a heartfelt and memorable commencement ceremony.
Throughout the evening, we heard words of gratitude, shared many emotions, and watched our Aklaqs step forward as proud representatives of Teller and the Class of 2026. The Teller Mayor spoke about their success and bright futures ahead, while an elder shared heartfelt words of love and encouragement for the graduating class. 💙
Ben and Taylor have worked hard to reach this milestone, and our community is incredibly proud to see them begin the next chapter of their lives. Their dedication, leadership, and perseverance will continue to inspire future Aklaqs for years to come.

Yesterday, our 6th graders participated in a fun SEL activity focused on meaningful communication. Students practiced speaking clearly, listening carefully, and working together as a team to complete the challenge.
The cooperation, teamwork, and positive communication shown in the middle school classroom was phenomenal to see! Activities like these help build strong relationships and important life skills that support success both in and out of the classroom. 💬👏

Last night, our seniors and their families came together for an evening full of food, laughter, and unforgettable memories! 🍕🌭🥤
We enjoyed pizza, hot dogs, root beer, and a whole lot of fun while playing games like Pictionary, hula hoop challenges, blind basketball, and many other exciting activities. The gym was filled with smiles, cheering, and great moments shared together as a community. 😊🏀
Graduation is this Friday at 7:00 PM, and our seniors could not be more excited for this special milestone! We are proud of all they have accomplished and can’t wait to celebrate the Class of 2026. 💙🎓

Yesterday, Sir Jonathan took biology students outside to collect water samples near the school for their end-of-the-year science project. Students discovered all kinds of interesting things squirming around in the puddles—including live mosquito larvae and other microscopic organisms! 🔬🦟
Back in class, students examined their findings and explored the tiny living world around them through hands-on scientific investigation. Projects like these—where students use academic skills to explore and learn from their own community—are what learning is all about! 🌎📚

There will be no open gym Wednesday, May 13th, through Friday night, May 15th, because of senior graduation. With open gym starting back up Saturday, May 16th.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Summer school will be open to students who need extra academic support. Summer school is highly recommended for students who tested in tier 3 on their MClass state reading assessment and is optional for those in tier 1 and tier 2.
If you are interested in enrolling your child in summer school, please have fill out the permission form found at the front desk before May 15th.
The summer school program is 16 days long and runs from Monday, June 8, 2026 – Thursday, July 2, 2026. Please see the calendar. Summer school is from 8:00 am-12:00 pm Monday-Thursday. If your child is not in school by 8:00 am, I will make attendance calls to check that your child is on his/her way to school.
Lunch will NOT be provided. Students will be provided with snacks only. Any student that attends 10 out of the 12 days will be invited to an end of summer school picnic celebration at the beach on the last day of summer school. Each student involved in the program will participate in reading and math. The tentative daily summer school schedule is shown below.

The Aklaq Spotlight is on Levi! Levi is always ready to learn and consistently puts effort into producing quality work, especially with carving. He comes to school with a smile on his face and is always willing to help his classmates.
